Krakow: Czarna Kaczka (Black Duck)

Quacking good restaurant! Despite not booking ahead, the maitre d' found us a comfortable corner on a busy evening in August, and we were promptly and helpfully served. We had starters of carpaccio of duck and oven cooked pierogi of duck washed down with a local Okocim white beer. For mains one of us tasted a dish of half a roast duck cooked in a local samartian style stuffed with red lentils and served with pumpkin and blackcurrant sauce, delicious but very filling. The other had an equally delicious and well-cooked dish of duck breast stuffed with chicken and walnut and served with cranberry sauce and sides of a warm salad. For dessert we had cooked Cracovian cheesecake with cherry coulis and hot apple pie with ice cream, delicious but not looking like an English apple pie/ tart at all - but don't let that put you off! The staff were kindly and helpful but not over fussy. The restaurant was bustling with life, much to our amusement and very unstuffy in its approach to dining, which suits us - don't do posh! As we were leaving we had a brief conversation with the maitre d’ who was interested that a couple of foreigners were enjoying tucking in to traditional Polish food, but we think that travelling means tasting, too, especially when it is as delicious as these dishes.
